AT-TUWANI: Palestinians to rebuild homes demolished by Israeli military in Qawewis

Palestinian villagers from throughout the South Hebron Hills will gather Friday, 28 March 2008, in the village of Qawewis to begin rebuilding homes demolished on 19 March 2008 by the Israeli military.

The Israeli military used two bulldozers to demolish eleven structures in the agricultural villages of Qawewis, Imneizil, Ad Deirat, and Umm Lasafa. Nine of the structures demolished were homes and two were livestock enclosures. The structure demolished in Umm Lasafa was the home of a large extended family, with an estimated area of 240 square meters.

The Israeli military has repeatedly demolished homes and other structures in the South Hebron Hills in recent years, including three structures Qawawis during February of 2007.

According to Amnesty International, Israel has demolished at least 7000 Palestinian homes since 1967. Not only does international law forbid such actions, but the Fourth Geneva Convention requires Israel as an occupying power to protect the civilian population under its rule and provide for its welfare. Article 33 of the Fourth Geneva Convention explicitly forbids collective punishment, and the demolition of houses constitutes a grave violation of Article 53.

Isrealis and Americans alike do not get to hear about such "gentle" blowing up of families' homes with the diesel power and steel plowshares smashing the frail homes of poor farmers and herdsmen near Hebron in Palestine. We only hear about the amateur rockets the Hamas activists in Gaza send over the border into an Israeli village, rarely hitting any thing or anyone, but frightening just the same. And then the Israeli army goes back into Gaza that they left, deserted and hungry and full of unemployed and angry young men, and use their tank cannons and automatiic rifles to kill the "terrorists".
Certainly there can be no terror is seeing your home for centuries crushed and flattened in ten minutes. It is too gentle and "civilized". Public Works stuff.
Jews in Israel learned too well from their Christian/Nazi persecutors in Germany how civilized terrorism is carried out.
